PEFC Certification in the printing & packaging industry

Firstly thank you to Harlequin for providing us with this case study on PEFC Certification in the printing & packaging industry.

Harlequin Printing & Packaging was formed in July 1997 with the vision of becoming the market-leading supplier of printed and packaging products exclusively for the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) market.

The continual evolution and growth of the company has been built around the supply of high quality, proprietary B2B products, knowledge, and expertise through some of the longest-standing independent, multiple outlets and globally recognized brands through to the leading online food portal in the world.

With >20 years of experience, we are specialists in sleeves and cartons, short or long run, standard or complex point of sale packaging. We are also a BRC AA certified food packaging organization.

Commercial print and large format work run in parallel to packaging production.

Commercial brand literature encompasses all aspects of print marketing materials.

We are the print partner of choice for local governments, universities, corporate organisations, and SMEs alike.

We design and manufacture a wide range of standard and bespoke products personalized with a brand image. Applications include; sports arena, exhibitions, company signage, banners and posters, vehicle graphics, shop fronts, menu boards, etc.

The driver for PEFC certification

Consumer awareness of the environmental and social impacts of packaging has never been higher.

Harlequin is committed to fulfilling consumer and customer demands. Sourcing packaging materials that are certified sustainable, legally sourced, and also not connected to deforestation.

Purchasing PEFC certified board and paper provides assurance that the wood fibre used in the manufacturing process originates from forests where sustainable forest management practices are in place.

PEFC certified board/paper not only protects forests at source, but it also provides an input for the growing and critical recycled board market.

The use of PEFC materials supports Harlequin’s environmental credentials, increases supply chain transparency, and also improves customer/consumer engagement.

Why Interface?

Interface has been our certification body for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and FSC for a number of years. We have an excellent relationship with them and when considering extending our scope to PEFC they were the obvious choice.

In addition, the ability for a UKAS accredited certification body to combine ISO9001, ISO14001, and Chain of Custody (COC) certifications (FSC/PEFC) is key to our needs.

The process with Interface

The process with Interface could not have been better. From quotation, planning, conducting the audit, receipt of the external report and certificate.

The pandemic has posed challenges to all businesses and the way in which Interface has managed remote audits is to be applauded. Highly efficient and effective.

Highly recommended.

Benefits of certification

PEFC certification further underpins our environmental credentials. Likewise our commitment to providing sustainable packaging solutions. Therefore differentiates our company and products in the marketplace.

We will actively use the PEFC green logo. Therefore promoting the fact our products are manufactured from sustainably managed forests and controlled sources.
