Sustainable Christmas

Sustainable Christmas

With climate change being at the forefront of everyone’s mind, here are some great tips for a more Sustainable Christmas.

Single-use plastics

Avoid single-use plastics such as disposable cutlery, equally paper plates can be just as damaging. Some can contain coatings or special chemicals which stop them from absorbing moisture from the food (no one wants a soggy plate!). If either of these has been used then this can mean that they are not compostable and in some instances not recyclable!

Glitter

Steer clear of the glitter!

Many forms of glitter contain microplastics. As this breaks down it can release chemicals that can be harmful to both humans and animals.

Plastic-free wrapping paper is a much better choice, but ensure that it is responsibly sourced. You can check this by looking for either the FSC® or PEFC logo.

Look for the logo

Did you know that if either the FSC® or PEFC logo appears on your festive products, this means that it has been responsibly sourced?

Here is a list of festive items to keep an eye out for these labels on – some you may not have even considered:

  • Christmas Cards – buying a certified charity card means that you are supporting charities in need at this time of year, whilst ensuring that the cardboard/paper that has been used is responsibly sourced.
  • If your Christmas presents contain Viscose textiles, rubber, bamboo, and cork as forest products these can also carry the labels.
  • Christmas Crackers – Did you know that many crackers are not recyclable?! Many contain plastics in the form of toys. Look for crackers which are and contain recyclable products.

FSC® and/or PEFC Certification

If a product is referred to as being either FSC® or PEFC Certified this means that the materials used to produce the product have been traced at every stage. From the forest, right the way through to the end user. By purchasing products displaying these logos you can be assured that it has come from a well-managed forest with high ethical standards.
