Music for Pieces of Wood

Music for Pieces of Wood

Steve Reich is an American composer who pioneered minimal music in the med to late 1960’s. He uses simple, and audible processes to explore musical concepts, and Music for Pieces of Wood is a great example of this.

Music for Pieces of Wood, is a fine example of how something of interest can be made with only basic elements.

Music for Pieces of Wood is produced using Claves, which are a percussion instrument, consisting of a pair of short, thick dowels. Traditionally the are made of wood, typically rosewood, ebony or grenadilla.

When struck they produce a bright clicking noise. Claves are sometimes hollow and carved in the middle to amplify the sound, as seen in the Music for Pieces of Wood video.

Music for Pieces of Wood was used as part of the trailer for the well know series The Walking Dead, Season 8
