Things to think about when Preparing for ISO 9001 Certification

The first thing to do when preparing for ISO 9001 Certification is to get yourself up to speed with what ISO 9001 is. You can find out more by visiting our services page, or by visiting the ISO website itself. On the ISO website, you can purchase your own copy of the ISO 9001 for SME’s Handbook; this is an extremely useful thing to have in preparation for Certification. Once you have figured out exactly what ISO 9001 is, how it can help you, and most importantly, how it can benefit your business, all that is left to do, is figure out how to start the process.

The process on ISO 9001 Certification begins with a Stage 1 Audit. This is quite simply when a Lead Assessor from the Certification Body, makes a visit to your organisation, in order to review any existing systems you have, any documents you have in place, and complete a Gap Analysis in order to identify any non-conformities so they can be rectified ready for Certification. This is like an initial visit, so that you can find out where you are in the Certification process, make any necessary amendments, and take any important steps.

An important step you may want to take when preparing for ISO 9001 Certification is to get an ISO consultant. Some organisations do not necessarily need a consultant, however, if you need that extra support, or have limitations of time and resources; an ISO Consultant may be just the right thing for you. You can use an individual or an ISO consultancy company.

Time is always a factor in preparing for ISO 9001 Certification; you should plan for approx. 3-6 months for your Certification to be complete. However, this will depend on your organisation and the scope of the certification.
