The new ISO 14001:2015 has been published. Organisations can therefore begin the transition journey to the new standard. There is a three-year transition period for those certified to the previous standard.

Should organisations want to purchase a copy of the standard themselves, they can do so at the BSI Shop. This will enable you to prepare for the transition and gain a head start in becoming familiar with the requirements of the ISO 14001:2015 standard. Owning a copy of the standard will provide you with the information you need to identify what steps your company needs to take in order to meet the requirements of the 2015 standard.

To provide organisations with the tools they need to preserve the planet’s resources for future generations, and to ultimately save money, the new standard will focus on the organisations strategic planning processes.

Continual improvement will also be of high importance in the new ISO 14001:2015 standard, meaning that the standard will focus on continually improving environmental performance, as a pose to concentrating on improving the management system. This will ensure environmental management is combined with your company’s business strategies.

Some of the benefits of the new standard are:

  • Continually improving your environmental performance.
  • The organisations management team will have more involvement.
  • Plans to protect the environment will improve an organisations environmental performance and minimise risk.
  • ISO 14001:2015 will take a new structure that is relevant to all ISO management systems, leading to easy integration with multiple systems.
  • The Chair of the technical committee that developed the standard and undertook the revision, Anne-Marie Warris, is confident in the new ISO 14001:2015 standard; she promises its relevance for the next 20 years.

The previous ISO 14001 has existed for the last 20 years and, as Anne-Marie points out, “has fulfilled many of the dreams we foresaw over the last 20 years, including helping people to manage all their environmental issues in a holistic manner”.

She adds, “Looking forward, the new version will help with a stronger integration between environmental issues and an organization’s strategic action planning and thinking. I foresee the life-cycle perspective and supply chain issues embedded in ISO 14001 becoming stronger in the future.”
